Can a renter use Sunplug?
Yes. Sunplug is designed as a removable, temporary option for renters and people who cannot put solar on the roof. It should be used without drilling, cutting or making a permanent change to the property.
Do I need technical or solar knowledge?
No. You can start from zero. The full kit comes with simple instructions, and the important first questions are easy: do you have some sunlight, a safe place for the panels and a normal wall socket nearby?
Will Sunplug work on my balcony?
In most cases, yes, Sunplug can be installed on around 98% of balconies around Australia. As long as you have somewhere to securely position the panel(s) and a suitable power point nearby, you’re good to go. Sunlight and shading will affect how much power you generate.
Do I need to put anything on the roof?
No. The full Sunplug kit is removable. It is not a rooftop installation, so you do not need to own the home or change the roof.
What comes in a Sunplug kit?

How does Sunplug connect to my apartment?
Sunplug is designed to plug into a standard power point as per the setup guide. The solar power then helps offset the electricity your home is using during the day.
Will Sunplug work during a blackout?
No. Like most grid‑connected solar systems, Sunplug will switch off during a blackout to protect line workers.
Is it difficult to get started?
The first decision is simple: check the sunlight, choose a safe place and read the short instructions. You do not need to understand solar terms before deciding whether it feels right for you.
What if I am still unsure?

How much does Sunplug cost?

Are there ongoing fees?
For standard plug‑and‑play balcony solar kits, you generally pay for the hardware upfront. If you add optional monitoring features or extended support plans, any ongoing costs will be clearly communicated before purchase.
Will it save me a set amount?
No one can promise the same result for every home. Sunlight, your home and when you use power all matter. Use the power bill worksheet as a simple guide, not a guarantee.
Where should I place the kit?
Choose a safe place with some sunlight where the panels can sit without blocking access or creating a problem. Keep the setup removable and use it as supplied.

No. Sunplug is designed to be simple plug‑and‑play for end users—no electrical licence required. You mount the panel(s) and plug the system in as per the instructions.

Do I need my landlord or body corporate approval?
Sunplug is designed to be renter‑friendly and non‑permanent. Many customers install without formal approvals, but some buildings have their own rules for balcony items. If your building has strict by‑laws, check them for peace of mind

Am I allowed to install Sunplug at my apartment?
Usually, yes. What’s “allowed” can depend on your building rules and which state you’re in.
NSW update (from 1
July 2025): NSW strata reforms mean an owners corporation generally can’t refuse “sustainability infrastructure” (including solar) just because it looks bad. They can still consider practical issues like safety, structural and waterproofing risk, and electrical compliance.

What if I move house?
Take the balcony solar kit with you. That is one of the reasons it may suit renters. Check the new home has a safe sunny place and follow any new rental or building rule.
What does balcony solar actually power?
Balcony solar helps offset the electricity you use at home by feeding power into your apartment’s circuit when the sun is shining. This can reduce the amount of power you draw from the grid for everyday loads (like computers, TVs, lighting, and appliances already running).
Will it power my whole home?
No. Sunplug is intended to help with some everyday power use, especially during the day. It is not a promise to run every appliance or replace your normal electricity supply.
What if my balcony gets shade?
Shade reduces solar output—sometimes significantly. If your balcony is shaded for most of the day, you’ll generate less power and see smaller bill savings. North‑facing balconies usually perform best, followed by east/west depending on your usage.
Is plug‑and‑play solar safe?
Yes—when installed and used exactly as instructed with compliant equipment. Make sure the power point you use is protected by an RCD/safety switch. Don’t modify the system or use damaged cables.
How many Sunplug systems can I install at one location?
One. Sunplug systems are designed to output a maximum of 800W (aligned with international rules) and help prevent your circuit from overloading. Installing more than one system at the same location is not recommended and can increase the risk of overloading.
If you want higher savings, adding a battery is the best option (up to 6 batteries, depending on your setup).
How many batteries can I add?
You can add up to 6 batteries, which provides approximately 6kWh of storage.
Can I take Sunplug with me when I move?
Yes, Sunplug is designed for renters. If you move, you can typically uninstall, pack, and reinstall the system at your new place (subject to the new balcony layout and any building rules).
Do I need internet or Wi‑Fi?
Not necessarily, basic plug‑and‑play operation doesn’t usually require internet. If your kit includes (or you add) optional monitoring features, you may need Wi‑Fi for setup and viewing performance data.
What data does Sunplug collect?

My system isn’t generating much power. What should I check?
Check
- Sunlight and shading (even partial shade can reduce output),
- Panel angle andorientation,
- That all cables/connectors are fully seated, and
- Any indicator lights on the unit. If performance still seems low, send us photos of your setup and a note of the time of day.
Why haven’t I seen much change in my electricity bill yet?
Savings depend on sunshine, shading, system size, and whether you’re using electricity while the sun is shining. If most of your usage is at night, the impact may be smaller. Reviewing your usage patterns (and any available monitoring) can help you shift
some daytime loads to get the most benefit.
